Flying Scholarship Ground School is held at virtually(Google Meet - link shared via email) every Tuesday 1900 hrs - 2130 hrs from late September to early December. Additional exam preparation sessions may be held during weekends in December for flying scholarship applicants.
Those who are applying for GPS or PPS are expected to attend all classes. Glider Pilot Training Course (GPTC) classes end around 2100 hrs. 2100 - 2130 hrs will be used for questions period for GPTC applicants, if required; and engine classes for Power Pilot Training Course (PPTC) applicants. All are welcome to stay.
Cadets interested in applying for flying scholarship in future years is encouraged to attend ground school sessions at least one year in advance in order to get familiar with the material. The ground school is a compressed review and do not always have time to explain from basics.
The main reference book of the course is "From the Ground Up". The AV World sells one for $69.95 (plus tax). They offer a 10% discount when mentioned you are with the Air Cadets. A mass mail order may be arranged in Sep. The squadron has some older editions for loan. Material is similar between editions for the purpose of this course.
A quota is placed on the squadron for number of applicants for GPS and PPS. 5 GPS and 5 PPS applicants may write the entrance exam. The candidates will be selected based on marks accumulated during the ground school sessions as follows. Learning aptitude is a significant factor in flight training and may be an override factor in exceptional circumstances.
A short quiz about 10 questions will be given each Tuesday night. The questions will be on material covered in the previous week, assigned reading for current week, and topics covered during the night. The quiz with the lowest score will be dropped.
If you have a valid excuse to be absent, please notify the course staff ASAP. One quiz will be counted towards the dropped quizes. Your final mark will be negativelyimpacted if you miss more than one class.
There will be one PO Check per topic spread throughout the ground school sessions. They are listed in the schedule below and will be confirmed at least one week in advance. Make-up PO Checks for excused absences are allowed within one week. It is your responsibility to schedule a time for the make-up PO check.
Quizzes & PO Checks will be held online this year. More information to follow.
